PARTE 2 / The father who locked the room to protect his daughter…

One of the fighters next to me — a tall guy with cauliflower ears — looked at Dustin as if he was seeing him for the first time.

« What do you mean by ‘she didn’t want to listen’? » he asked.

Dustin turned towards him.

« Don’t get involved, Trevor. »

Trevor didn’t move.

Dustin’s confidence had always depended on everyone accepting the version of reality he created. Marcy fell for it. Marcy exaggerates. Marcy is emotional. Marcy made him angry. Marcy needed discipline. Marcy was the problem.

But lies become fragile when enough people stop agreeing to keep them together.

Sirens wailed outside. Distant at first. Then closer.

Dustin froze. Red and blue reflections crept across the windows of the room.

« Did you call them? » he asked me.

« I didn’t need to do that. »

He looked at the front door. Then the back hallway. He moved. Quickly.

Trevor planted himself right in his path.
