« Move aside. »
» No. «
Dustin stared at him.
« Are you really doing that? »
Trevor’s shoulders lifted.
« I have two sisters. »
For the first time since I had entered the room, Dustin seemed uncertain.
Then my phone rang. It was my wife. I answered immediately.
« Carol? »
His breathing was rapid.
« Marcy said that Dustin wasn’t the person she was most afraid of. »
My eyes returned to him.
» What ? «
« She says her uncle is already on his way to our house. »
The room disappeared around me.
« Which uncle? »
« You know which one. »
Raymond Vale. Dustin’s mother’s brother. The name had come up twice before. The first time was at Thanksgiving dinner. Dustin had mentioned that his uncle owned several transportation companies, nightclubs, and a construction firm. The second time was six weeks later, when I saw Raymond’s photograph in the local newspaper, next to an article about a federal investigation into money laundering and organized crime.
